We have a twin axel 5 ton motorhome and want to travel from Calais to Lake Garda any advice welcome regarding going through Switzerland as we are told this most straight forward route????

Think you will have to stop off at the border post on the way into Switzerland to get a piece of paper for a >3.5 t van on which you would then record the days that you use their motorways. From memory that's the alternative to the normal 'vignette' for heavier vehicles

Nearly correct, except that you have to enter all the days that you are in Switzerland, even if parked.

Since you are just transiting the most cost-effective one to buy is the 10-day one which is valid for a year, so any unused days can be used on the return transit.
