Hi,
We rely on 4g on our phones hot spotted for Internet.
Thinking of a portable 4g booster for when signal is weak.
Any opinions please?

Hi Ken & Steph
Lovely to see you posting. Long time no see. Can’t help you with your request, but trust you are both keeping well.

Hi Munchie

not sure such a device exists. at least I’m pretty sure they didnt when I looked for a permanent one for the house. If you do come across one, please post here.

could be a finders fee in it for you!

You can get mobile data routers (mifi) that have connectors for an external aerial to boost signals.
Huawai make popular 4G routers
Other brands and 5G capable routers exist.

I believe it is illegal to boost and retransmit mobile phone signals.

Usage of mobile signal repeater devices or boosters is illegal under Section 8 of the WT Act 2006

That said. You can buy boosters/rebroadcasters/repeaters However, someone I know, who really knows about these things, told me, they do work but given some of the cheap chinese models he's seen, said he wouldn't want to spend much time in a room with one switched on!

The Ofcom rules changed in 2018 and boosters are now allowed but there are strict limitations.

There were some further changes in 2022.

I bought a mobile one 2 years ago, this particular model doesn’t seem to be available now. It was not very good as first supplied but eventually they provided a directional yagi aerial and it does now work. The difficulty is that the power of the retransmitted boosted signal has to be low enough not to reach the external receiving aerial. If it does there is a feedback loop that stops everything working, probably including you neighbours mobile phone too. Because of this the phone needs to be placed next to the internal aerial. The home installations are probably better.

I have found a few occasions when the booster has made a difference and made an unusable signal into a reliable download. I probably wouldn’t buy another one, too expensive for the few occasions we have needed it and a bit of a fiddle tracking down the signal with a directional aerial. With the original omni aerial it was a waste of time and money.

Best to just get a good MIFI and antenna and put your phone sim in that if the signal is weak.

This is the one we have and it’s really good and easy to install yourself.😊👍
