When the new legislation comes in for B ljcences we shall looking for a MH to have a max weight of 4250kg, but there don't appear to be any that fit into this category at present, so we're thinking of either uprating or downrating a MH to comply with 4250kg. I've trawled the net but can only find a Voyageur at 4500kg that could be downrated. Budget IRO £100k max. Any ideas on suitable models welcome.
 
Our Pilote Explorateur is rated at 4500kgs. It is however not exactly new and I've no idea how much a new(er) one would be but worthy of enquiry.

My understanding was that the EU are considering the change to 4250kg. But it's still in the proposal stage. And I've not seen anything that suggests the UK will follow.

I would choose a van first, then worry about payload after.

In Europe it is approved and ratified and will enter into legislation at the beginning of 2025. Whether the UK follows or not is yet to be seen.

Drivers with a B1 licence will be able to drive 4250kg motorhomes... If they are from EU states that adopt the legislation.
Exactly that. The rule is actually to accommodate the new electric vehicles coming soon as due to increased power and therefor weight of the batteries, most new cars will be close to this maximum. For some reason they have included motorhomes, not sure why but let's not complain.

Yeah, it's odd. It's 4250kg, but only for specific vehicle uses, specifically naming motorhomes. Either they want to encourage EV motorhomes, or there are some MPs that really like motorhomes (cough 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿).

I suspect it's more that they know almost every European motorhome is registered as max 3.5t but in reality is often over 4t.

Last year, in Germany, we camped next to a German with an identical motorhome to mine ( A German Hymer)
Other than the steering wheel being on the other side, the only other difference was the plated weight.
His was 3500kg, whereas mine, built for the UK market, is 3880kg

He wondered why mine had nearly half a tonne extra, load capacity.
I explained that we had had it on a weighbridge are were within 50kg of the max permitted.
(We only ever travel with 20kg of water, but everything else was loaded for a summer month abroad)

Lets just say we had less stuff on board than he did!
A lesson learned.

(Apparently weighbridges are not normally available to the general public in Germany, he knew what they were, but had never seen one)

Since when do politicians want to make something legal just because everyone is breaking that law? It's usually an easy way for them to generate revenue.

Which section of the populace would you be aiming to please to introduce a special
"Motorhome tax, Caravan tax and Delivery van tax" ?

It might work with some sections of the blue rinse brigade who retired to the seaside towns and don't want the filthy tourists occupying the local restaurants and pubs, saying in their camp sites, or that dreadful Amazon company delivering things people have ordered using that new fangled interweb thing.
None of which we approve of, so it must be banned forthwith!

I just mean they could declare it a safety issue and put up loads of enforcement. No tax changes required.

Adria Compact with the 9 speed auto comes from Fiat as a base vehicle plated at 3650kg. Adria sell it as either a 3500kg van for obvious licence/marketing reasons, or with a ‘free’ :LOL: ‘Upgrade’ back to 3650kg for those with a C1 licence wanting to save on the RFL.

It has all the heavy duty items already fitted - wheels, tyres, hubs, brakes and front suspension - to make an up plating exercise to 4250kg with 2400kg on the rear axle, relatively painless by just fitting rear air.

Same is true of a number motorhomes. Mine included,
It is sold as 3,500kg, a 3,880kg and a 4,100kg
Only difference is the plate on the side.

The 3,500kg is primarily for the EU market
The 3,880kg is primarily for the UK market
The 4,100kg is an 'upgrade' they can sell mostly to the 4x4 market (but is only actually a paper exercise)

The engine HP, a smaller one and a bigger one, and the automatic or manual gears are all options on each of the weights.
