This will affect a lot of trackers people are using at the moment. Trackers use satellite GPS to receive position data but they then use GPRS ( 2G mobile network) to upload that data to a server.
The 2g network will be switched off eventually but should be good for a few years. If anyone is thinking about getting one make sure it uses 4g technology. https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.p...nkTGJrfEY5192y4xd4_aem_IoOhjWO_YGsiVn03D-7c-g

We don't need to worry about 2G switch off for nearly a decade. I have quite quite a few GPRS trackers reporting battery volltages and temperatures both at home and in the motorhome.

However, the 2G shutdown in the EU is way ahead of ours in the UK and as a result my trackers do not work and I get no reports of voltages and temperatures when we are in France.

This is not a problem, as when we are in the EU, we are in the 'van and I know how warm it is and the Sterling Power shunt tells me the battery SoC.

But, if I was buying a new tracker now, it would have to be 4G

No, 2033 is the target for switching it off. EE hopes yo have it done by the end of the decade.

Would that affect wireless cameras? Both home and on anyone’s van ?

You're not wrong, ie. 18 x months ago when we left the UK for Germany, our tracker's last recorded location was Eurotunnel Folkstone. It never responded again until we came back 3 x weeks later. 2G Tracker binned, and replaced with a 4G Tracker, which is working a treat here in the EU. 👍

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Yep happening at pace as they need the 900mhz spectrum allocation for 5G networks. 😉

Pre launch of 2G (digital as it was called) I was doing some consumer field testing on O2 and Vodafone… it was such a backward step at the time! 😜

I wouldn't think so. If a camera has a sim card it would be over 4G They might connect to the Internet but it would normally be over WiFi and that might be via a router with a 4g SIM card. You'd never be able to send video over GPRS ( 2G)

I am thinking of wireless cctv security cameras? We have a mixture of hard wired and wireless. The wireless record to a SD card mounted in the cameras then replay with WiFi - cameras are 4/5 years old and if I remember correctly they operate on 2g - Perhaps time to replace the WiFi ones that use 4g although no rush and cameras have come a long way in the last 5 years. Maybe people with door cameras need to look at their cameras to see if 2 / 4g 😉

WiFi and mobile data on 2g are 2 different things. Does your cameras have a mobile data sim card. If not you've nothing to worry about.

No data sims just users the WiFi to send pics to our phones 👍 Probably me getting mixed up with two bands on router -
