Since 2021, this time
Our heater is set to hot and the fan on about 2. While driving the heat comes out for a couple of minutes then it goes cold then maybe 10 minutes later it goes hot again and repeats like this all day. Any ideas why it might be doing this or, better still, how to fix it? TIA!

It sounds like the thermostat has failed, is there any movement on the temperature gauge? Most gauges are so damped down that it may not show

The gauge on the dash has been constantly in the same position all day, just slightly under the middle.

Most makers temperature gauges are all but useless, they damp them so much they only tell about overheating, often after it's too late. If the thermostat is not easy to replace get an aftermarket temperature gauge you will be surprised how much the temperature fluctuates depending on load.

Temperature can be measured via the obd2 port. I ve used Alfaobd and even torque pro to do this. The you can draw a nice pretty graph and understand whats going on.
I only have a crude OBD reader. I guess I will need some hardware for that software; what interface thingy would you recommend? I could try it on my android phone when we get back from France.

vgate icar pro bluetooth 4.0
I have bought from the one in porthcawl top of the list. and use it with Multiecuscan Alfaobd and Torque pro.
You could try the demo/free versions of Alfaobd and Torque lite with an android device.
I have heard the £10 version do not work with Sevel Vans ie do not speak fiat.

Even a cheap (£20) OBD reader will inform you of coolant temp. Mine does 👍🏻👍🏻
