Can you take a supply straight from the live battery terminal as long as it has a in line fuse? I need to put a supply in for a new Air suspension compressor

If you have an energy meter, don't forget to take the supply from the correct side of the shunt.

i.e. not direct from the battery terminal.

Im not sure about an energy meter as the van is 20 years old so I’m assuming that this is more modern Technology

The inline fuse should go very near the battery end of the wire, not near the device it is powering. It's supposed to protect against shorts on the wire, as well as a short in the device.
