As I am away and my fridge has decided not to work on gas and there is no EHU available I'm looking to get a 12v cool box to tide me over until I can get my fridge sorted.
Any recommendations for a reasonable cool box please.

Bear in mind the cheaper ones draw current continuesly depending on size will use 2 - 4 amps.
Compressor ones use a lot less power and get a lot colder but fairly expensive.

Do you want a cool box which will be cheap but fairly ineffective
Or a 12v compressor fridge box which are very good but not cheap?

I have one of these 22litre

Currently on Amazon for £179 [I paid more :(]

It's very effective but quite power hungry if using it as a freezer, there's probably better energy efficient & better insulated models about [but at what price?]

I have 200 Watts of solar and 200 amps of lead acid batteries.
I was thinking of running it during the day and turning it off at night.
It's only to keep some beer and lemonade cool and a bit of fresh food stuff, spread, cold meat etc.

I want it to keep things at around 5c in the present UK temps of around 20c.
I don't mind paying a few hundred pounds as at the moment we are stuck with a fridge that wont work on gas on a site with no spare EHU and no prospect to even have the fridge looked at for at least 3 weeks.

I store my alcohol in a box underneath the van. Hidden from view obviously. The coolest possible place without a fridge i think.

I have 120w solar and 200Ahr batteries - and that just about keeps up when I want to keep Kerry's food frozen. I've never tried using it at fridge temperatures. I also have a portable 100w solar as a back up.

I wouldn't be comfortable turning mine off at night, especially warm ones, as the insulation doesn't appear to be great and it doesn't keep the temperature that well.

As long as its sunny my 200 Watts of solar will more than cope during the day as I think they use around 4a/h ?

Doing that you would be OK with a cheap one but as you are prepared to spend a bit more I would get a compressor one.

I bought one of these last year on route to the Drax rally.
Compressor operates as a fridge or freezer ( not both at same time)
Very happy with its operation as a Fridge while at rallies, cools very quickly and once at temperature i have calculated 3amps per hour.
My 2 solar panels keep up with it easily during good days and we have 2 x 90amp batteries.

Used it off the mains adapter at chrismas and in freezer mode. (y)

If you want a cheap one, the Halfords cool boxes work well - 12V . 40W. Mains adaptor is available. Used to have one when I was tenting and if not careful stuff on top of the box was capable of turning to ice. You will hear the fans running

I’ve got a Dometic CFX3 45 litre. Been running for the past two weeks down in Spain, keeping a pretty constant 4 degrees. The app says it uses about 12 or 15 a/h per 24 hours. That’s not troubling my 300a/h of lithium and 240 watts of solar at all. It’s running on 12 volts but will also run on mains.

It’s brilliant but not cheap.

Which Halford one ?
I've looked on their site and they list one for £100 but it doesn't say whether it's compressor or not and doesn't state how much power it uses.
They list a compressor one for £250, again no mention of power usage.

We have had a Dellonda compressor fridge freezer for a couple of years. Fantastic bit of kit, draws about 22ah pre 24 hrs.

Cheers

Just the basic 24L sized one at £65 now (a lot more than I recall paying years ago). As above it is always on, but should keep stuff cool if you turn off overnight to avoid noise. If all you need is the stopgap solution whilst you fix the fridge no need to pay for an expensive compressor type coolbox.
