Being driven mad after plugging in phone to charge and some time later discovering the plug slipped out and nothing charged. 😖
Why are there so few options? I have seen replacements that give you USB ports - which is all I need.

Any Funsters’ experiences with replacement would be welcome. DIY or pay a professional? Mount it beside the original or in place of?

I did both, replacing lighter sockets with a USB port and fitting extra ones where needed.

They are not difficult to fit providing you can connect wires either using crimped on connectors or soldering. For safety you should probably add an in-line fuse with a low rating such as 5 amps.

Get good quality ones from a recognised supplier and perhaps avoid eBay cheapies. There have been reports of the odd one catching fire.

An example is shown below but there are other suppliers and makes. You can also get Type C USB sockets which operate from a 12 volt supply, they are more expensive but should give much faster charging. I'm going to save up for a couple. :)

Just replaced mine
Getting the old one out can be tricky, you have to depress 2 tangs inside - opposite each other.
You can buy a tool but I managed with a pointed knife.
Found similar replacement off ebay £4.
Don't buy the cheap all plastic ones.
You might have to disassemble it the way you took the old one out.
To be honest I just destroyed the old one getting out.
