Im a Newbie
Hi all.

I have got my van, insured it etc as camper in progress... One thing I need to get ready for and get my head around though.
Bearing in mind I know a very good garage who are VOSA Approved and deal with emergency services vehicles, they look after all of my vehicles. SO they will be doing any work undertaken on my self-build.

I need to add 2 seats in the rear, most likely rear-facing against the back of the drivers/passenger seats. I have a scrap Astra H in which I could remove the seats from and maybe use the front seats to install in the back of the van... now I realize those seats may have to be installed via a frame/spreader under the van to give the area some strength for the seats......

How have you all done it?

Thanks

I realize seatbelts will be needed, I can take the seatbelts out of the other car if needs be.
Or am I better off getting hold of minibus seats with seatbelts?

:welc:
you are better off getting seats with integral belts , as to spreaders there was a thread about just this on here recently . BTW VOSA ( now DVSA ) do not do garage approvals , they only authorize and monitor testing facilities . depending on the level of work needed in your "self build" you may be better served using a firm that is experienced in camper building , as most things are not experienced in a normal garage workshop .

Sorry, yes the garage I use is a testing facility.

OK ill see what seats I can find, I did do a search on here albeit a quick search about the spreader plates etc.
Thanks

I've used some vw transporter seats for mine as
A) they are cheap since people want singles.
B) the passenger one is a double swivel which I don't think anyone else does.
C) they are narrower so despite being a double I still have a tight walk through back to front and back past the second row.

I've used the front passenger seat as a read seat with another transporter double.

They have box bases unlike movano seats so there is extra storage in them too.

Cheers James

Thanks James
What was fitting like.. did you go with Spreader bars underneath the van for the strength?

Hi

I've gone with large square washers.

Cheers James

re spreaders 75mm square 5mm thick minimum fitted below floor on legs at rear end of vehicle and above floor on legs at front end of vehicle . Use the largest diameter bolt that will fit thru hole in foot of leg , and at least 8.8 or 12.9 rated .HTSH

also check for excessive corrosion, serious deterioration or a fracture in a load bearing member of the vehicle structure within 30cm of the anchorage (where a seat belt is attached to a seat frame this will apply to all seat mounting points)

Minibus seats are sometimes no good as typically they are M2 certified to a lower standard. You need to get M1 rated seats.
