I've just been quoted £180 for an MoT and a full service. Is that a good rate? Is there anything in particular I should look for in the "full service"? I've done a lot of my own motor maintenance in the past but I've never had a diesel or a HGV before.

Cheers!

My suspicion is the service is just an oil and filter change at that price.

There are filters: air, fuel and pollen which need changing periodically. There are also auxiliary belts which need inspecting too which isn't a simple job as they need bits removed to see them. Plus of course brake pads and so forth.

I suggest asking the garage what they are going to do.

MOT charge is basically about £50, so there’s a few corners being cut somewhere. Decent oil and filter will be getting close to £100, so there’s basically no margin for paying wages etc.

Be lucky if that covers the oil

Similar to what I payed recently ,watched them doing the work and asked if that was all they needed to do and was told that oil and oil filter change is done every year ,air filter etc every other and as I’d watched them do the work last year was happy with that.
As an aside was told by the mechanic how impressed he was by the underside of the van ‘it’s like new under there’ and that’s on a 2018 van with 65k on the clock🙂

Rather depends on what they mean by 'full' , dependant on milage and age (yours is 4 years I know) 'Full' could even include replacing all the brake fluid and diesel fuel filter, wheels off and rotate, check handbrake adjustment, inspect pads and discs for wear amongst other things.

Having spent tens of thousands of £s on a motorhome I would not be cutting corners on servicing. At that price I doubt you will be getting 6 litres of 0W-30 fully synthetic oil and all the complex checks a proper service involves.

No way are you going to get a service and MOT at that price.
An MOT is £54 and a full service by a main dealer around £650.

I hear what you're saying - I do want a decent service, especially when it comes to things like the choice of engine oil.
But I think I've got the measure of the main dealers - they exist to relieve retirees of their lump sums. My local dealer quoted me £800 to replace my rear parking camera. I did it myself for £3.79.
I won't be using a main dealer. But I will be checking what's included in the service. And £180 may be too good to be a good deal.

Presumably things like tyre condition ,brakes ,windscreen wipers \washers ,lights etc would be checked as part of the MOT ,I watched them drain down ,replace filter and oil and I asked and they replaced a side running light (I carry spares) as part of the MOT ,I asked the mechanic if what they had carried out was all that was required and he replied ‘ what else is there to do for this service?’

Our "full service" at CamperUK last September was £550 an that was with a 10% discount.
Think it included oil & filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, wheels off inspection & brake fluid change.

£108!

Right numbers, wrong order!

That cost would not cover the MoT (£54) and the oil (£100).
No filters, No checking, No labour.

That figure is not even enough for a very close relative to offer 'mates rates'.
I suspect that is for the MoT only (and 2hrs labour to drive it there and back).

Or does the mechanic fancy you, and is expecting a 'full service' in return ? ;)

Parts only but Fiat not stamped on the box as this doubles or trebles the price.

Air filter around £15
Oil filter around £12
Pollen filter around £15
Oil around £45
Fuel filter around £20

If I remember correctly as it’s been a few weeks since I did the Daughters Ducato.

There’s a possible added cost for the stupid sensor that breaks for fun on the fuel filter.
This is around £70.

MoT from £35 to £55

Labour to be added for the service.

Many garages have a bulk tank of 0w30 or 5w30 and use that whether it's the correct spec of not....synthetic, oat etc.
The garage I worked at years ago had 5w30 mineral as that was the most common at the time so customers would bring their own oil

yep and thats why somtimes independent work shops are better as they do not stock a lot of oil when a job comes in they call the motor factors to get the correct oil as and wen needed.and moor so than ever with these modern motors u need the correct oil and correct number on bottel
