Motorhome warranty - is it worth it.

I have had my 2016 swift rui 310 for a year now. The insurance backed warranty with Mbg runs out in a few days and they have offered to renew it at £35 per month. It does seem to cover most things engine and habitation wise but of course there are limitations on how much they will pay. I have just had a habitation check and all is well so I don't expect to need to claim on that in the next 12 months. Do any other owners cover their MH in this way and is it worth it.
 
Insurance will always be skewed to mass market risk. If you’re confident with your vehicle, I’d self insure by sticking the money in a separate account or it’s own ‘spaces’ account (modern savings approach) and see where you end up!

I’m quite happy with risk though…

Only until you need to make a claim, then you find out the policy is next to useless.
Cancel and put the saved money aside to pay for anything that needs doing would be my advice.

My MH came with an insurance backed guarantee. When you read the small print about having to have written quotes submitted for authorisation before work is carried out and the hourly rate they would pay I think it would be almost impossible to comply. The conditions just make it impossible to repair quickly In my opinion.

We have got a Platinum warranty with them that came with the van.
Had it not been for the dealership intervening at a high level in the company, the warranty company wouldn't have paid out for a replacement solar panel. (seperate story :( )
Its was and still is not an easy process, our experience is the previous suggestion of setting aside what would be £400 pa and keep as your insurance sounds a good option.?
We looked at a lot vehicles with different dealerships and even the better ones like Camper UK are moving to warranties - they seem to change their warranty companies aswell -
It creates a barrier/hurdle between the dealer/repairers and customer, and a lot of questions/red tape. I personally wouldn't spend money on warranties.

I always get the impression that most insurances/warranties find a way not to pay out, so perhaps going the cheapest route may make sense, retaining your cash in the event that something needs doing.

And you don't know you might not have anything go wrong, then you have a nice little sum to go towards the tunnel fare 👍 (y)

If you're an average owner with an average motorhome the insurance company has to take in enough premiums to pay out the claims pay for marketing including the dealers commission and admin and still make a profit. Simple maths say that on average you're going to be a lot better off taking the risk yourself and putting the money in the bank.
It's the same with extended warranties on household goods drains water pipes, funeral cost insurance, new for old on household contents, musical instrument insurance etc.
It really depends if you're someone who likes to insure everything as they then know that there won't be big one off bills (assuming that the insurance company will pay out which is a pretty big assumption) and doesn't mind paying out loads of premiums or if you want to cover any risk yourself.

If it comes free with the purchase👍, gives a year to study the small print for the numerous hurdles to be jumped to make a claim. After that, don't bother, you'll end up subsidising any claim on ludicrously low hourly rate charges. Also a requirement for VAT registered garage servicing, or any claim will fail.

We had a customer who was making a claim on his warranty / insurance but they obviously offered to settle with him for substantially less than our estimated price.
So then he wants us to do it for what the warranty company is offering him , but doesn’t really want to pay for his fuel to get to us either so wanted to deduct that too ⚠️
He wasn’t a happy camper when we declined his offer and also notified his warranty company that our estimate was no longer available to him or them .
We always notify the warranty / insurance company as well for our own protection.
I personally wouldn’t bother with a warranty, and to be honest don’t normally even bother with all the nonsense involved with keeping manufactures warranty in place with dealers on new vehicles either 👍

I am not inclined to agree with your last comment, Basildog - we’ve bought two new ’vans and would’ve been well out of pocket if we hadn’t kept up the manufacturer’s warranty as they both needed work 2-3 years after purchase. However, you pays your money and take your chances, eh? ;) (y)

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you have six years to take a claim to court for faulty good. Read the Act and know your rights.
I had a Ford Kuga, just out of the three year warranty. Evans Halshaw said I had to pay for repair. I quoted Act and they still stood their ground. A lot of people would have been convinced they had to pay but I knew my rights. The Manager was extremely rude to me. Following my complaints to Ford and EH head of franchise, the manager had to ring me the next morning and say “he had pulled a few strings and I didn’t have to pay”. Apparently, he was shipped out to another Branch for the way he had spoke to me. Result🤗

We took out a 3 year one with them when we bought our (then) 18 year old Ace Capri. They paid out twice when we broke down for items that I would have considered wear and tear - first time a new clutch, second time a new starter motor so we have been very happy with them

That sounds excellent. I am surprised that they took on 18 year-old vehicle.

What was the premium?

My father in law, who had a lot of common sense when it came to money, always said that it was only necessary to insure for what you couldn’t afford to loose. That advice had served me well.

Exactly what we do. How can it make sense to insure against everything insurance companies don't go bust they must be taking in more than they're paying out and enough to pay the admin and profit. Thinking you're better off insuring everything is like thinking you can win at the bookies

Never bought an after market warranty of any description. They are commercial products sold by companies to make money, by paying out less money than they take in

Put the monthly premiums aside and youll soon have a fighting fund to cover the unexpected

We have an MBG warranty, and have had two expensive claims on it. I’ve found the company very easy and professional to deal with. The (3 year) warranty came with the van, but based on my own experience, I would recommend MBG - it gives me peace of mind, which is what I want.

Good to get a recommendation if anyone doesn't want to carry the risk themselves. On average though it must cost more unless you're unlucky.

I guess it just depends on the size of the claim. It’s the same with our dog insurance, which we don’t have for the occasional ear infection, but for the open heart surgery. But yes, at the end of the day all insurance is a gamble, and the banker always wins!

I purchased a 3 year old low mileage Jag about 10 years ago together with a 2 year warranty. After about 12 months the engine basically blew up. The quotes were in the region of £7,000 to replace the engine. The warranty company accepted responsibility very quickly and arranged for the repairs to be done. 10 years and 150,000 miles later apart from routine maintenance the car is still going strong.

Took a cat to the vet many years ago, and they wanted a specialist scan done, cost £2k. Covered by the DL insurance, and before anyone else gets there, it wasn't a catscan
