We used to visit the North Yorkshire Coast regularly out season. The council persecuted and banned motorhome parking in so many places that we thought F U and we now go elsewhere. The council has always done anything it can to stop us parking including illegal TROs in Scarborough.

If people look back at posts over several years about Scarborough borough (which includes Whitby and Filey) they will find that the explanation is a long standing planning policy.

We're off there this morning for 3 nights so hoping the Magpie will be open😃

used to love staying down on the harbour, even did with Family Guy and a couple of others over New year many moons back. As you say, they closed it now, not allowed to stay so I won't be going there. And I like to spend a few quid do I.
We’re the same. We always stayed a few nights by the harbour in the winter and we always spent money there. Their loss.

Long standing policy to line the pockets of campsite owners.
Utter rubbish - and you know it because it has been explained to you countless times.

And neither will your repetition make your view true
The true fact is that small businesses are being damaged by planners quoting the same bull about their chosen planning policy. We used to visit Scarborough and Whitby off-peak and the places we visited told us they needed our custom.
Planning policies can be changed easily, I had planning refused myself at home with the quote "its planning policy that we require". I disputed it and was granted permission.

Perhaps their thinking is, why do we need to spend council payers funds clearing up after FLTs throughout the winter. Just a thought.

If they charged for parking it would make a profit. They have to clean up after car users anyway, with fast food wrappers, babies nappies, BBQs etc just thrown out and left

Fast food wrappers could be the answer, you don't tend to get them from motorhomes.:giggle:

Same as any other seaside town 🤷‍♂️ a lot of shops close from november to march

I've never had a problem parking my 7m van in whitby out of season, same with newquay, st ives, hunstanton, cromer, llandudno etc
If you gonna roll up at 2pm and expect to park right outside Harry's bar then you better be on a push bike no matter what time of year

Then join the gravy train and buy a campsite. All it takes is selling your home, cashing in all your savings, selling your cars, maxing out your credit and taking huge bank loans on way above inflation repayment terms. Then work 7 long days a week. Don’t worry about global recessions and pandemics or costs going through the roof. Just lie back and wait for your pockets to be lined.

No fact. Just because you keep saying it wont make it true!
Maybe we should issue handbags on here so these disputes can be sorted out in ladylike fashion (at five paces)
Sorry. Can't help it if some members refuse to acknowledge the facts when they are repeatedly shown them :)

Not knowing the background to the discussion and having read the response from the Council, it would appear reading between the lines, they don't want Motorhome, Camper vans, Gypsies, the Cardboard dwelling homeless and other itinerants staying overnight.

They very obviously do not see vehicles and their occupants as an asset to the local hostileries and attractions.

They also very obviously see Whitby (and and the rest of the borough) as trying to be a 'posh' upmarket area, and don't see Motorhomes or their occupants as 'posh' (hence the permission granted for high spec wooden lodges on a lake)

Even if an individual was able to purchase a car park, for use as a car park during the day and for (paying) motorhomes at night, you would not get permission, it's not the type of visitor they want.

Whitby deserted in the winter !!!!
What a load of tosh, we had reason to visit one winter, it took us ages to locate a hotel with availability at short notice.

absolutely brilliant. ‘….Whitby trying to be a posh upmarket area….’

I go in most days and I must have missed those areas. Any guidance appreciated.

It’s certainly a lot nicer now than it was 15 years ago.

The important word is 'trying'
:giggle:

It would appear that Whitby (and Borough) are the "Hyacinth Buckets" of the Council world.

The sitcom follows Hyacinth in her attempts to prove her social superiority, and to gain standing with those she considers upper class. Her attempts are constantly hampered by her lower class extended family, whom she is desperate to hide. Much of the humour comes from the conflict between Hyacinth's vision of herself and the reality of her underclass background. In each episode, she lands in a farcical situation as she battles to protect her social credibility.

That's strange because we live there (well 3 miles away) and almost everything stays open! We like the winter because we can go in park easily and easily get in at bars etc. Very few places close in the winter because its pretty busy right up to October half term and from the February one onwards and at Christmas/ new year. I've heard locals complaining about motorhomes and usually put the right but anecdotally there is a problem with vans without toilets in laybys especially near robin hoods bay.

trying in what way?

Having seen the motorhomers sprawling out over several parking spaces in the Marina car park before the policy was enforced, I wouldn't find it surprising if the council gained a bad impression of motorhomers.
As you don't know the background perhaps it would help if you search posts over the years on this forum, and also local press articles, as you will find it is far more than that though (including abuse of private marina facilities). You will also find that there are plenty of roads (as opposed to car parks) in Whitby where there are no restrictions, NYCC only having introduced restrictions on four roads where camping was deemed to be a nuisance.
The lodge development was an adjunct to an existing attraction, not something right in the middle of town (quite apart from not being in the Whitby area of Scarborough BC).

Just spent most of the day there (hoping to see storm Arwen winding itself up.)
Very little spare parking left at seaside or town centre. Most shops open and appear to be doing just fine.
For some strange reason the open front ice cream / coffee kiosks aren’t too busy.
