The lake is part of the verdon barrages and the town of castillon was flooded for electricity and our pleasure purposes.
We are staying about 500 yards from the auchan and paying 7 euros and I m not grumbling. Think you can get leccy for 3 more. At least 38 spaces marked up and segregated it's more of a basic campsite. About 8 of us here. There is a resistance museum here which may be included in the price. We had to find the old man to pay !
It's a good kilometre into town.
We passed the aire in town on our bikes and it is a "pass the salt" tarmac car park but the machine is currently broken and is free. We think 10 euros if it works.
We have cycled through the town but decided to leave that til tomorrow as we see if we can find something for the afternoon and stay another day (weather permitting as mistral blowing but hopefully not here)
The bike ride went uphill for about 4km on the main road. No dramas white line separation then downhill a short bit to the lake where there is another aire and very well positioned it is. We think 10 euros.
Cycling or driving use the car park next to the aire for the lake. Map location
You can walk straight ahead or cycle along a path which brings you to hidden inlets and solitude beaches with wigwams set up from driftwood for shade. You are pretty close to 3000 feet at the lake but you can still watch high up in the near mountains people jumping off with parachutes.
The water is warm once in and really surprisingly the rocks don't hurt your feet.
This is paddle board heaven if you park at the aire by the lake and take a picnic with you.
Continuing the cycle down to the impressive barrage
We then did an about turn cycling uphill a thousand feet with longer views of the lake. It was relatively steep but only about 5k
At the top the lake/river reappears and you get views of above and below barrage
It's a steep descent on the white road that runs alongside the lower lake and pick your spot to swim but it was colder which makes no sense to us as this water has come from above !
Parking area
Demandolx, Arrondissement of Castellane, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France
The journey back involved height barriers so if taking the quick route from castellane for the lower lake be aware
