The route des cretes (this one) starts at Cernay and finishes at sainte Maria and various lengths suggested between 73 and 89 KMs.
It starts relatively steeply and curvy with some cobbled hairpins and turns with views across the Rhine valley appearing regularly through the trees.
It is a 30 mph road though. It is not quick at all.
All of a sudden a huge car park with several coaches both sides of the road appear. We pulled over and there is a 7 euros museum and coffee shop but further up the hill (200m) is a memorial to the dead of the Alsace in WW2.
I didn't know what expect but probably a big statue but we got a solemn flat area then as you walked over to look at the view the huge uniformed cemetary slowly came into view. Very sobering.
Underneath the flat area is a free museum but it is closed between 1230 and 1330 and we wanted to get up le grand balon before rain and as there must have been 300+ 16 year Olds waiting we have it a miss, this time. Unfortunately outside there were no english explanations
