Bit of a rotten long drive down the route Napoleon today. A few too many sat nav inspired short cuts over windy mountains but once near Grenoble all was good.
Forcalquier was our selected stop. It was chosen as it was on the luberon voie vert and we will find out what that is like tomorrow.
We knew the aire was free and it looked like there was plenty of space so that was good enough for us.
We filled up with water from chateau amoux st auban aire as we passed it and saw free water so emptied toilet and grey at the same time.
Forcalquier was searched for on here and not many visitors to the town who have written about it. Couple of campsites near here somewhere.
As you enter it looks dusty but more chalky and is divided by tall trees into 4 lengths. Each length could easily take 8 vans either side plus spaces on grass means 70 spaces in my view before you have to put your beret on to create a space. Reckon we have 35 here tonight.
Excellent rubbish system with functional black and grey waste and free water. 500 m steady incline to town.
It is a walled town and round every corner is something quite pleasing to the eye. Restaurants take up a lot of the narrow footpath and lovely aromas and ambience just prior to lights coming in during a hot August evening. There's a cathedral here somewhere but we only went for a leg stretch as we know we will be here tomorrow night but we did follow the path up to the citadelle. That is slightly steeper, cobbly and keeps going, but it is oh so worth it. 369 degree views over the luberon, a mini church and an organ playing cloche machine. A campanologists dream.
We only walked round for 10 minutes excluding the citadelle and thoroughly impressed.
Tomorrow (Monday) is market day and was mentioned as a good market by one of the few funsters to have been here.
We will return in the morning for market then evening for night time photos.
Never really heard of the place but already on a return visit in future
Expect more photos to be added in next couple of days
Edit.
Today we went in having read about the market being a good one.
Market day is Monday.
It is a very good night on excellent market.
It's spread around the town so traffic is at a standstill with customers crossing the main road.
Where we are on the aire about 500m uphill to the market, that is used as a car park and gets full. You won't get into the aire after 0930 hrs on a Monday.
Everything and more for sale including snail fluid cream sold as anti aging cream by a lovely looking lady !
There is a PMU in prime position next to the TO which will see us tonight after dark with all the lights on.
We got gold dust info on cycling around here with lots of literature to take away.
Arrive here on a Sunday night and you won't be disappointed at the market.
Horse drawn carriage from the aire to the market. Presuming it costs money.
