The name derives from the 2 mounts within the village. Or 2 nipples.
But we were attracted to the town from locations of "A Good Year" and in particular l'etaing. In the film they have an open air cinema at one end and everyone waiting their meals, drinking wine round the outside before a thunderstorm finished the evening for most.
The other calling point was a free aire.
I could understand if someone wanted to describe this aire as a piece of unkempt wasteland for van lifers. Because it isn't much more than that. Good points are, it's flat, there's some compost bins, it's quiet, you can choose between grass and stone, you are 200 m from a beautiful town/village. We will stay here at least tonight and happily leave the van as we cycle to 3 or 4 nearby villages tomorrow. You can park with a view of the town
We walked up through a footpath which appears to be recently well used by dogs, but it's short and then given a choice of steps or slope we went up the slope to this double breasted hilltop village entering via a guard of pigeons in the wall
Then came the incessant picturesque streets.
Before a climb up to donjou st Michel
With views of the other mount across the terracotta provencale rooftops and valley
Before descending and getting further lost and enjoying every turn round the corner
And then came l'etaing. Beautiful. Sat there for 10 minutes on a bench just looking at it next to a beret wearing old man. Nothing said, nothing needed to be. Just a nod from each of us as we left.
But the town carried on giving before we decided not to neglect the other nipple
Then the church which has a poplar tree allowed to grow as high as the steeple
Back to more town
And I would expect us to be at l'etaing tonight for a beer
Couldn't help ourselves and went back for an afternoon beer in the sun. Pop up market turned up
And the nighttime drink.
