I am torn between Switzerland and a few of the alpine passes, and Claire wanting to go to Annecy and then across to near St Etienne to visit her friend Veronique.
I have an idea that Claire will win on that destination.
So far I have the outward crossing booked on Le Shuttle. There was an early booking discount of 20% that I wanted to use for the entire trip. But for some reason my dates meant that only the outward journey qualified! So I only booked a single and got the discount. It made the trip out the same cost as it would have been on P&O.
For the return three weeks later, I checked out P&O, Le Shuttle and Irish for their prices. All similar crossing times Calais to Dover/Folkestone. They came out as £166.49, £207 and €157 respectively. I booked Irish with pet lounge. When I hit the Halifax Clarity a few minutes later it cost me £132.10.
I came back on the "Oscar Wilde" last year on the way home from Assen and it was good enough and comfortable enough.
We should arrive in France around 11am local. Depending on the dog food situation (Reggie eats raw food) we may have to detour via Picard at Coquelles for their "Dogador" raw food. It comes in cubes in a 1kg bag. With added veggies it's six meals a pack or three days.
I have already booked a first stop. I like to have the first night booked whenever we go across, and this year is no exception. I have booked a site called Ardennen Camping Bertrix in Belgium for the night. It scores 3.5/5 on Tripadvisor so that will do us for one night. I booked though the Caravan Club as it was cheaper than direct.
From there it's on the non toll route towards Strasbourg and the start of the Alsace part of the trip. The non toll route has several options, the one I like to look of it Luxembourg and Germany rather than down through France.
Strasbourg. Yes or No? I have yet to decide. I have been before and I can't say it was one of those "wow" moments.
