Staying at Newhaven Ferry

We are booked on the early ferry 13th Feb
I have seen posts somewhere about staying in the ferry queue overnight ready to board

Is this a thing still

Assuming it is not a Sunday get there before 22:00 and you can fill up at the Sainsbury's PFS 300 yards away then get yourself a KFC or MacDonalds if that is your bag while waiting for the 23:00 queue to board if there early.

I don't know about being first on and thus first off. Being just 6 metres I have some times been shunted into the lane next to the hull which has to filter into the adjoining lane to exit and had to wait for the crew to release my lane after the adjoining middle lane!! Slightly galling!

Newhaven is so laid back & easy compared to other ports.

We usually do Newhaven as it is so laid back but it was so expensive on 28 December. So we booked via Irish Ferry’s from Dover to Calais who also take Tesco Points. We arrived two hours early and they put us on the earlier Ferry (no extra charge) boarding immediately no time to even make coffee in a flask (we don’t do ferry food or drink). Nice ferry with wider vehicle lanes, didn’t have the lay-back seats but much quicker than Newhaven to Dieppe. Will use again if necessary.

I notice when booking they dont ask your age only 16+, how long do they hold you phone before you can claim your over 60 discount, is it an easy affair?
I guess you can tell I have just spent over 2 days two separate on-line chats which took well over 3 hours each to get anything done. Response time between questions raised by them was over 50 minutes, before I got fed up and went back to get another adviser, who was also slow in response, but not 50 minutes.

We use the Newhaven to dieppe ferry as it’s so easy. We find parking up at the terminal has to much noise for us, so we tend to park up at the far end of the promenade in Seaforth which is only 10 mins along the road.

Just booked our tickets the other day and it was soo easy, only took about 5min to sort it all out, as Lenny said the took our reg no and asked if over 60 and that was that.

Doesn't work like that unfortunately it just means first through check in . Then you get put in a lane and there's 5/6 lanes

Not guaranteed to be first.

I've been first at check in everytime I'm uses it. But only once been first on

Yes we always do - from memory park in front of right gate as left one has the search area so delays the queue

We haven't used the ferry for a while, a hiatus on motorhome ownership, but there used to be a pub on the way to the S side of the docks that would let you stay in their carpark overnight and had good food and drink (sorry forgotten what it is called). If you go on a bit further there is parking close to the outer harbour but we weren't sure if the gates were locked overnight. The pub is about 5-10 mins drive from entrance to the ferry port.

We live down the road in Lewes so never had to stop overnight and tend to get the earlier ferry. However, we are planning to cross over in May and take the 5’ish ferry and then stay in the Dieppe Aire before travelling on the next day, never done that though.

Anyway, S4S lists a couple of pubs round Lewes, the Juggs in Kingston is just down the road (there happens to be a CL site very close to the pub too) but The pub is good, one of our locals. Also, there is space by the cricket ground, also on S4S that motorhomes sometimes stay overnight, presumably catching the ferry next day. Again, another good pub round the corner, the Swan. There may be others, e.g. Abergavenny Arms in Rodmell, don’t know if they do pub stopovers though.

That’s what we did, great location away from the car park and road.

However, although first through the gate we were then reparked and boarded at least half way through the process.

Once the previous ferry has gone you can stay in the queue, we’ve done it a couple of times. Same detail in Dieppe.

I'm about to set off from Somerset in a couple of hours, ready for tomorrow sailing. I will park up at Seaford as suggested above, we stayed there last time in June and it was perfect and very close to the port. It will be a tad chillier this time though!
