Hi ,
Has anyone had success in increasing the load capacity on the rear axle , at the moment it is 2.000 tonne the front is 1.850 so as you can see the gross has already been uprated to 3850 .
I have sent an enquiry of to SV Tech and they have given me a 10 day response time .
I was hoping to get some sort of idea before that if possible.

That’s all I could get even with semi air on the rear

SV Tech are good But Van Weight Engineering [ V.W.E. ] will be cheaper, speak to Dee. With some mods my 2000kg R and 1850kg F front had an uplift to 2240 kg R
and 1850kg F, so 4090kg.I've assumed you have a C1 licence. You will probably need new tyres, and some air assist to the rear.
This was on our Sunlight, [Fiat chassis ] which I think is made in the same German factory as your Corado.

Mike.

Hold that one , I’ve literally just had a reply from SV Tech and they said semi air suspension is required to get 2240 kg on the rear axle, I am impressed.

Van weight engineering were a lot cheaper than SVtech when I had mine done. Very quick and excellent service.

Like you I needed rear air. Was only £600 fitted though.

They also supply the kit for you to do sometimes. It is easy to do and saves quite a bit of money doing yourself.

I've just used SV Tech to up plate again 27 days from initial enquiry to receiving new V5. I use them as they are very efficient and helpful.
I got 3900 this time with no changes on van required. The last Adria coral needed the semi air that SV Tech supplied and took a couple of hrs to fit

Well worth while. I have semi air on mine even though only 3500kg as it improves the ride enormously.

Which semi air ride kits are everyone using?. Might look at going down the DIY route

I went with vwe,
originally 3.5,
then up to 3.8
I had the tyres changed, vwe increased it to 4.230
very easy transaction with them 😁

I fitted ours myself 6 years ago from a kit I bought from an eBay seller complete with an air compressor which I installed in the space under the end of the sofa next to the kitchen.
It's a pretty easy job and took less than a day including running the pipework and cable to the dash to have the controls to hand.

I checked, and the seller I bought mine from is still selling the complete kits for the Peugeot Boxer/Ducato. The price has gone up a bit from when I bought my kit and is now £455 delivered.
Although the seller is based in Slovenia, the kit was delivered in a week.

VWE were excellent with full analysis and advice before committing and cost a total of £276 inc vat when I up plated.

Adria Compact SC with 9 speed auto ‘box.

Fiat and Adria plates show 3650kg - 1960kg front/2000kg rear.

I added Dunlop rear air suspension and Dee at VWE did the calculations and we’re now at:

4250kg - 1960kg front/2400kg rear.

There was mention of the ‘Dunlop limit of 2400kg on the rear axle”. So maybe not all air suspension systems have the same maximum weight specifications?

It does look easy😁, I watched you Paul, most of the time doing mine.

I recently uprated my payload from 3500kg to 4250kg via Van Weight Engineering (VWE). They were excellent to deal with and led me through the process - and were considerably cheaper than SVTech.

My 2020 motorhome is on a Ducato base with leaf spring suspension (not Alko) on a light (not Maxi) chassis.

The process required me to fit rear air suspension, new wheels, and tyres. I had previously uprated my tyres to Cross Climate 121 loading, so didn’t have that cost as part of the upgrade. I sold my Fiat alloy wheels for more than the cost of the new (virtually identical) wheels on the higher loading limit.

I used a Martech air suspension kit which I purchased via Ebay although this can be purchased direct. An easy DIY fit. Martech can provide a range of options - with or without a pump (so you just use your own 12v tyre pump), one or two valve/gauges to give the option of both sides adjusting together or each side independently. The benefit of using Martech too is that VWE already have the required certification details and saves you having to source this from another manufacturer. VWE May have this for others too.

The pump is usually fitted behind the drivers door footwell, and the pump switch and gauge(s) at the lower dash shelf to the right of the steering wheel - to allow ease of adjustment. I opted to fit the pump and gauge in my rear garage as it was so much easier - but mainly because I was unlikely to be adjusting the pressure much, once set to the desired ‘ride’.

The DVLA changes to the V5 was easy enough and completed without a problem.

So in all a simple enough process. I could have completed the upgrade to 3850kg without changing anything, and made it a purely paper exercise with VWE and the DVLA - but decided that if making the change, I would go to the max possible for my vehicle (4250kg)

Hope this rather lengthy post is helpful to someone.

Jim

Yes the Sunlight is basically the same as the Carado , if you don’t mind me asking what size tyres do you have on yours , I have the Toyo 225/75 R16 C and I’m hopeful the they are sufficient.

Just a reminder that it is not the make or size of tyre that is significant, but its load rating. That is shown on each tyre for reference. You can then work out if they will be able to take your new max axle weights and overall new max vehicle weight. There are plenty charts online which show the max weight permitted on the tyre loading index Shown on the tyre.

so as you can see the gross has already been uprated to 3850 .
So its register at 3850 on the V5 if so you don't really need SV Tech as axle weights aren't shown on the V5, you just need a new weight plate from whoever fits the air upgrade.

Good for axle weight of 2900kg.

Great tyres by the way Lenny 👍

I must be missing something. My understanding is that the maximum GVW that with a Fiat light chassis fitted with rear air assist and 16” tyres was 3850kgs.

How are VWE able to achieve GVW of 4250kgs.

I understood 4t was the maximum on the light chassis UNLESS it’s the new ones with the big wheels 130x5 pcd and big brakes on, I think they can go up to 4250kg
Then again I could be talking out my backside🤷‍♂️😁

Depends on which chassis I think the Fiat can go higher than the Al-Ko also depends on front springs.

Yep, actually you are almost right.

My Compactline on order has the 180 & Auto so fitted with the 130PCD 16" wheels, uprated front springs take the front to 1960 and air on the rear takes it to 2240, which gives a max of 4200kg. Might be able to go higher on the front with full 4C air but won't gain any usable payload.

I've got the light chassis. Currently 4090kg on 15" wheels, so unable to increase any more, other than front axle increase, and that probably won't actually help.
Mike.

I might just give VWE a call in the new year. I know its only a potential 150kgs extra, but for the sake of a few bob, 150kgs still worth having in your back pocket

Having had our Adria Compact 9 speed auto on the light chassis up plated by VWE to 4250kg with 2400kg on the rear axle - the original Fiat and Adria plates were identical at 3650kg/1960kg/2000kg - my understanding is that the possibility to go that high is down to a number of different factors:

This may not apply to all converters, but with the Compact and the auto option it comes from the factory with beefed up front suspension, 300mm ventilated discs all round, and 225/75R16 CP 116 tyres on Fiat 1250kg rated alloys.

Adding Dunlop rear air allows the rear axle limit to be raised the 2400kg, which combined with the original plated 1960kg on the front, gives the 4250kg overall. I’m uncertain if this is only applicable to the Dunlop kit so it would be wise to check that other kits are certified to the same specifications if going down that route.
