I am about to spray another guitar and other bits of cabinets...

I always get very good results with a rattle can spray lacquer from Toolstation.
As it happens this morning I'm actually spraying up a little plywood box I made yesterday with said spray lacquer.

Rattle cans without going to the expense of a compressor and all the hassle of mixing your own colour/paint...

As Old Mo. I bought a guitar to learn but broke my wrist in four places 20 years ago and can’t turn it over the frets without pain. So gave up before I started.

You can get a decent finish with spray cans. But you do need to spend a lot of time working through finer and finer grit sandpapers after the clear coat if you want a mirror finish. This one turned out quite well. The camera lens has distorted the shape of the guitar, but I was mainly trying to get some reflections to show the gloss finish. It's starting to lose the shine now though, so it may depend on the quality of the cans used.

Dave - maybe you should try a roadworn or a relic finish?
I was talking to my guitar tech the other day when I was picking up a couple of guitars on which he had done some work on for me. He hates doing paint work because it is so time consuming to get that mirror finish.
Back in about 1970 I did Re finish a guitar (Hofner Colorama) in metallic red using rattle can and got quite a decent finish but I wouldn’t ever bother trying again.
All of my guitars are battle scarred to some extent or another. I never buy a new guitar because it would break my heart to ding one. I buy used that already have a ding or two and than it doesn’t bother me if I add a few more.
Don’t get me wrong - I look after my guitars, and they are always transported in hard cases but they get worked hard and dings are inevitable.

Perhaps too late but might have looked ok in lacquered natural finish.
