No not running up mountains, I'll leave that nonsense for Haggers and co. I mean driving a car (or bike) up a designated hill course as fast as possible. I took part in my first hillclimb last weekend at Loton Park near Shrewsbury. Here's a couple of video clips:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151728477633816&set=vb.695178815&type=2&theater

An onboard view of my fastest run on Saturday practice:

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_C1glAMHE2k"]Lotonpark090613PB - YouTube[/ame]

And my last (and poorest) timed run on Sunday.

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bZv_QPaIZoU"]loton090613T2 - YouTube[/ame]

I'm sure we have other hillclimbers and sprinters in fun.

Ignore the timestamp on the two on board vids, its a cheap camera. There is afew seconds jump in the first vid too which is because the camera records in five minute segments then misses about for or five seconds before it starts the next segment.

Enjoy::bigsmile:

Gaz may well add a few photos from the weekend, there was lots of interesting machinery there, unfortunately some of them got broke:cry: A purple single seater with supercharged Suzuki Hyabusa engine broke his class record then spat a piston out at around 11,000RPM:Eeek:.

I wondered about the time stamp Dave, at first I thought you were in a De Lorean, as in Back to the Future.:roflmto: years ago a guy I rented a garage off had a Frazer Nash single seater built for hill climb, lovely bit of kit, can't remember what motor it had in it but I do remember the sump was made of magnesium, he smashed it at a meet, we amused ourselves, burning the broken pieces as fireworks!!:Doh:

How Ironic......exactly what we were doing last weekend! Only at Tregrehan - Five weeks time we have Castle Hill in Lostwithiel.

Usually go and watch a friend with his Rally cars. This time the other half went with me - was unsure what she would think of it not being that much into cars - she absolutely loved it! She has now said she will drive the Spitfire if I get it ready for racing (normally she hates it)

Friend has a 2 C2's and a 205. The C2's are full wrc spec - his new one is a mirror image in build to the citroen rally team - even built by the same converter. Stunning bit of kit! When it first arrived the converter had set some bits up wrong, which meant it was smacked up on it's first couple of runs. Toeing in considerably, which meant it lost control on braking. Was hoping he would be incident free last weekend, now it is set up right....but he did touch a bale on the hairpin:Doh: So that is being repaired again!

Other interesting, if funny sight - was a STEAM powered 1903. Took a while to brew up, and didn't get very far between boils - but historically very important vehicle as it was the first one to exceed 100mph back in 1903.

Do you compete yourself or just spectate? Spitfire could be interesting with that awful rear suspension. One of our suppliers area reps is going to put a 1.8 MX5 lump into a Spitfire which should prove entertaining, 130BHP in a chassis designed for 50 or 60ish BHP.

I used to build cars for a living many moons ago, anything that was stupid usually had my grinning face behind it. It all went wrong when I had a disaster on my biggest lunatic project, which saw me very nearly go bankrupt - had I not had enough toys to sell i would have been in trouble. That was an Astra mk2, with a supercharged 5.7, spaceframe chassis etc. That popped on third run to get timings and top speed. 47K up the khyber. I was doing very well until then! I moved down here, and well - there was no money for my sort of projects so moved on to other things.

Next door to my unit, I have a rally team based. Kind of a bad influence! Though spectating at the moment, I will probably build something - though it would be easier for me to pick something else up that finish the spitfire - mind, might do that as a classic standard classs, and pick up and old escort to use for climbing. Get my suspension skills back into play! :thumb:

Little tip for cornering - if you are front wheel drive, nail the back end to the floor, and leave some flex in the front....trust me! :thumb: It won't look right, but it won't move on the bends!

All this talk about rally cars has brought back memories of a holiday in Cyprus. Totally unaware that the Cyprus leg of the world rally car championship was under-way we were driving around mount Olympus on very narrow roads bemused by the amount of helicopters overhead when out of nowhere three rally cars flashed past, being a bit competitive I did attempt to catch them but my good lady put a stop to that.:Smile:

We soon came to a shut off section where the cars were starting a time trial. Unlike here security was non existent so we spent the rest of the day getting very dusty sitting on a tight hairpin with a sheer drop to the valley. Those drivers are insane.

The following day we visited the start finish point on the beach in Paphos, got some autographs and a load of video, amazing how quick they can change major components and have the car ready for the off again.

Reading this thread reminded me of the tales I used to hear from a lovely old couple, Mary and Colin Campbell, about his hill climbing days in 1930s Lancashire. It all sounded very daring and exciting.
He put his hobby to good use though going on to write a few books, still referred to today, 'The Sports Car: It's Design and Performance' and 'New Directions in Suspension Design: Making the Fast Car Faster' .
He treated himself to a new car in 1988, a Metro :ROFLMAO: which until we bought for our daughter in 2002. 14 years and 11700 on the clock. Yes, eleven thousand and seven hundred miles :thumb: and not a spot of rust. Shame it was Jo's first car...then with a bit or two from scrapped Metro's...Nixy's first car :Doh: It was not a case of grow old gracefully, it went raving and allsorts. They called it the Retro Metro.
Interestingly it had pump up suspension, I have never read his books :RollEyes: but is that something they put on Formula one cars? :winky:
Something else I remember, Colin Campbell's father was a haulier, up North, and Colin encouraged him to buy new diesel lorries. The first Winter Colin got the brunt of his Father's wrath when they invariably froze up unlike the reliable petrol ones! By the way, Mr Campbell would have been 100 this year, RIP with Mary (a poet...but that is another story) Jane :Smile:

Cheers Gaz, I knew you wouldn't miss an opportunity to show of some more of your photos :) (smilies don't seem to work from my tablet when used via a mobile phone).

In that shot I am hard on the brakes into "Fallow" corner which is a tad over 90 degrees left hander but only 75 yds after cresting the long straight at close to 70MPH (the big boy single seaters can be better than 110MPH here).

One of the beauties of hillclimbing and sprinting is the class structure which levels things out pretty well, plus you are the only vehicle on your particular bit of tack at any given time. In most sprint races you will be the only motor on track, at some hillclimbs there may be two or even three but they will be at least thirty seconds apart.

I'm running a pretty much standard '94 MX5 1.8, only mods are cold air intake, cone filter, custom exhaust, race seats/harnesses and ripped out the carpets.

As I'm in a local championship it is adjusted to your times rather than being up against your class competitiors directly. For example my class in the Hagley championship includes me, a 1967 Austin Sprite, a 1600 Peugeot 106 Rallye, stripped out and running bike carbs, a 1.9 GTI 205, a Renault Clio 172 and a 600cc bike engined single seater that weighs about as much as my engine!

As motorsport goes its probablynot as cheap as grastrack racing but it is good fun.

That's me in Museum corner in the first shot, a bike engined single seater on "Cedar straight", one of the top dog single seaters three wheelin' museum corner, a sports libre single seater (possibly a Lola, I'll check) and Graham Jones absolutely gorgeous "D type" replica.

D.

In edit, number 145 was an "aldon" and ran in sports racing car class.

doesnt look much of a hill to me. :winky:

most pics are on the level or facing downhill....what sort of a hillclimb is that :roflmto:

Oh its a hill alright but there are a few less steep bits and at least one downhill bit, why not get yourself a car, MSA licence, some PPE gear and come have a go? Its great fun and Gaz gets to take your photogragh if you're slow enough:ROFLMAO:.

we have hill climbs here in Scarborough.

they close off Olivers Mount, the bike roadrace circuit which is a public road, for the day and use Quarry hill.

pure hill climb....bit of flat at the bottom, then Mere hairpin then hill all the way and no more flat bits but only around 300mtrs long.
but it is 1 in 3 all the way up with a couple of gentle curves

left turn into mere hairpin and the bottom of quarry hill.

this gives you an idea how steep the hill is.

Hill climb at Dancers End

http://www.britishpathe.com/video/berkhamsted-motor-cycle-clubs

The motorcycle and car club I am a member of used to run major hill climb events in the 1930's.

As far a I know we only hold motorcycle events now, I don't know of any members who drive cars in competition.

The track at Dancers End is still there but on private land now. Maybe another event in the future. :thumb:
