We are thinking of getting one as a runabout and to tow on a smart trailer sur le continent. Obviously short trips only.
We don't want anything larger for storage reasons. Our towing capacity is limited to 1400kg but in any case our 2.2L engine might struggle with any thing heavy.

Size wise it would be possible especially if you drop the divider, however it is quite noisy and hot directly over the engine.

Just started!
We have a Smart4Two & an average sized cockapoo. He fits fine but wouldn't like to put 2 in there! Best to try it out.

Having had loads of Smart ForTwos I'd say with the older ones you'd struggle to get 2 in unless they sat all the time and you weren't going far, the newer one has a bit more room as it's slight bigger but again it could be a bit tight. It really depends on the size of your collies as they can vary quite a bit, next door to us have a massive one!

This might help.
I also fitted a rear tyre from a top fuel dragster in the back of mine.

We had the older type smart 4 two some years ago, but before we had our two standard poodles, I would say boot would be uncomfortable for even one of them. If your collies are on the small side maybe OK for short distances. Newer type maybe a bit better, but still the engine is under the boot.
