I'm a Newbie
Hi, planning on our first big road trip in our van at the end of March, very general plan is to cross over from Dover / Folkstone, head into Belgium, then Germany to pick up the Romantic Road then either Switzerland or Austria. We'll then head into northern Italy and spend some time around the lakes before heading into Croatia. Any thoughts and tips regarding places to stay (or avoid) would be appreciated, were looking for a combination of wild camping, Aires and the occasional sight.
We have time on our hands as my wife is an Irish passport holder so the 90 day rule doesn't apply. Having said that we are working on around 3 months for the trip but we have the luxury of a bit of flexibility, but neither of us want to in southern Europe in the height of summer. Worth saying it's just the 2 of us, no kids or dogs.

Thoroughly recommend the romantic route. Not sure what's what's romantic about it but lots of interesting places to visit and plenty of stelplazt. Download all the detail from German tourist office.

Can’t help with the sort of sites you want but know there is a camper stop in Peschiera del Garda and on our first visit there, to Bella Italia, we loved the area so much we stayed for 5.5 weeks instead of moving on. Easy bus ride to Verona and loads of cycling & lovely places nearby too.

Fussen has a camper stop we have used walking distance into the town at the end of the Romantic Road & easy access into Austria from there. Worth a visit & could get to King Ludwig’s fairytale castle (Cinderella theme I think)

Re Croatia we would say you must not miss some of their National Parks, in particular Plitvice Lakes, you walk it for a full day, and also Krka NP, we camped close to the entrance on a site whose owner also did guided tours of the park by minibus, you could not see it all otherwise.

Split, beautiful city with a full Roman Palace, wonderful! Plus many other beautiful coastal old cities to visit, we could spend years revisiting this country. 😊

Be mindful of the need for winter tyres chains etc at that time of year & the toll system for heavy vehicles in Austria & Switzerland, you look more than 3.5t

We are heading to Croatia in May and will go through Germany for a few stop overs.

We did the Romantic Route last October and Rothenburg is a must.
Stayed on the Stelplatz just near the town lovely village to walk around.

Waterloo Battle site is on your route with free motorhome parking near the museum. If your a military history guy, this is one not to bypass.
Your going to love the romantic road and Wurzburg is also worth a visit with a very good Aire too.

Consider Lake Iseo. amazing scenery.

Thoroughly recommend the romantic route. Not sure what's what's romantic about it
It was thus named in the early 50's in order to create an identity for that Roman trading/commerce route which would hopefully promote post-war tourism.

All the gear, and no idea!
We’re heading that way too at the beginning of June, plan is down the Black Forest into the alps and spend a week in the alps meandering towards Croatia (KRK) then back up the romantic route (again) and our annual visit to RodT. We stay in the aire at dinkelsbuhl the night before RodT and go to the supermarket opposite and stock up. Hopefully it will be a bit warmer than last time

Some of the stops highlighted on the tourist office website for the romantic road are 'fillers' Nice towns but just nothing special. Dinklesbhul, Nordingden and Rothenburg are definitely worth a visit and have great aires nearby.
