This months Camping and Caravan Club has a letter asking about speed limits and how the V5 caragorie N or M affects them, never heard of this before.

Supposed I should not be suprised that the CCC Senior Technical Advisor did not give a very explanatory answer, basically hoping the cop who stops you is in a good mood. What about the insurance? So it seems not all V5 docs have N or M listed, just looked at mine and not listed on mine either. I wonder what the N,M thing is all about.

Irrelevant if your unladen weight is over 3.05 tonnes.

Most medium to large motor homes will be but converted vans are likely to be borderline.

Speed limits

A limit of 30 miles per hour or 48 kilometres per hour usually applies to all traffic on all roads with street lighting

wonder what the N,M thing is all about.

M1 vehicles - passenger cars. M2 and M3 vehicles - buses and coaches. N1 vehicles - light goods vehicles (up to 3,500kgs) N2 and N3 vehicles - heavy goods vehicles (over 3,500kgs)

What I mean is no matter whether over or under 3050kg the police don't know.
It isn't listed on DVLA website.

Same applies to 3500kg or 4000kg, unless they check with DVLA they can't tell the difference.... They're all are the same vehicle to look at and they don't have the time or inclination to check every motorhome just in case

Unless they are doing a specialist road check with the highways agency et al targeting motorhomes.

But yes, it’s unusual and motorhomes are a very low priority for the police who are more focussed on diversity.


BTW, I bet very few owners know their own vehicles unladen weight, it’s not on the manufacturers plate, might be on a converters plate though.
