Just planning this year motorhome tour. We are using the Hull Rotterdam crossing in June and planning on travelling down the Rhine route before heading off to Austria, Italy and Lake Bled.
Which is the best route from Rotterdam to pick up the Rhine route, also any suggestion for the first overnight stop, Looking at travelling a max of five hours driving on the first day
Any suggestions would be very welcomed

Düsseldorf for me, probably been 6-7 times but still love it😁
We stayed on a Stelplatz and caught the tram in so easy to get around. If you are after a free spot there is plenty of parking right next to the Rhine and 5 minutes from the town.
We went down the Rhine along the back roads following the river and some lovely little villages and plenty of stops on the river front.

Are you sure you want to travel 'down' the Rhine?

You could end up in the North Sea.

We like the small town of Bacharach, stellplatz next door to nice campsite, take your pick, castle overlooking the town, nice restaurants, train station to Koblenz and the boat stops nearby.

There are many excellent stops along the rhine and some great cycling to be had. All you need is one of the apps and pick which you fancy. My one bit of advice is check which side of the river you need to be as bridges and ferries can be a long way apart.

Also if you are over 3500kgs, give some thought to your route through Austria as the idiosyncrasies of go box has caught lots of people out.

I assume you realise the mouth of the Rhein is at Hoek of Holland, which is where you get off the ferry!
(Although due to the Dutch spending the last millenia playing hydrographics, each branch of the Rhein delta has a different name)
The last place where the Rhein still keeps it's name is the section that comes through Arnheim, which is worth a stop for the WWII connections.

The 'pretty' bit of the Rhein starts at Koln (Cologne).
It would be worth getting a ship up (or down) the river between Koln and Bingen.
You would see all the castles and then get the train back, (or vice versa, the ships are faster going downstream!)

There is a very pleasant Stellplatz at Braubach, just below Koblenz on the East bank of the Rhine.
You can spot it on Google sat view quite easily at the lower end of the town, right on the river's edge.
The drive south from there is one of the nicest hours driving you can wish for.

Be aware that the trains run 24 hrs alongside the river at some points can be a little loud at times from passing freight!
Not just a "little loud", can be annoyingly loud all through the night. Choose your campsites carefully.

Have travelled down the Rhine and Moselle a few times. Often started at Remagen. Camperstop right next to where original bridge was, before the Germans blew it up as the Americans were crossing in ww2.. Very interesting area. From there easy drive down to Koblenz , then you can chose Rhine or Moselle. Many great camperstops on either river. Lovely towns as well. Highly recommended.

As said above the noise from trains running through the Mosel valley about every hour day and night is not good for a good night's sleep, we stayed in a Best Western hotel in Boppard with balcony doors open as it was a heatwave never heard so much rattling in all my life mind you, if you like trains!! 😄
