Transit thro' France in May, from Cartagena to Samoens, Haute Savoie, via Andorra (fuel) and via Castelnaudry, Aude, to visit friends.

We will be going thro' Vercors (old stamping ground) and it would seem like a route the Ardeche to get their would be good.

Brief recommendations for route, or do I just look for the roads Mr Michelin has green-lined ?

The route from Vallon Pont D'arc down to st martin is a good road (for sightseeing) following the river only about 500 feet higher with many belvederes but is likely to be rammed and wont be much fun if it is.
The higher Ardeche has some lovely spots like les cheylards
Lower down you have Uzes or the ceze river with many beaux villages

A few places on the journals we have been round there with links in signature

Heres the cycle route into Pont du Gard from a cracking aire on a disused railway line from Uzes https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/uzes-to-pont-du-gard-on-bike.248573/
