Apart from the spots that have already been mentioned, if you have the time come off the A75 before Gatehouse of Fleet and head for the Cream o' Galloway if you have a couple of hours to spare.....especially if it's a nice day and ideal if you have a dog.
Lovely walks around the attraction, have a bite to eat and don't forget to sample the gorgeous ice cream made on the farm. Better still, buy a tub and take it with you(y)

Our favourite place for a run from here is Portpatrick.....lovely harbour and some nice little shops and tea rooms.

p.s. It's absolutely gorgeous here in Skyreburn today.....also with regards to the dreaded midges "gellyneck" is spot on. It's the weather conditions that determine whether they'll come out or not......too much of a breeze and they don't like it. We get midges all year round here, hardly little things they are. We're 500 yards from the sea and were bitten quite badly during the week, as there was no wind at all.....still got the bite marks:(

@icantremember, let us know when you're passing along with A75 and you're welcome to drop in and have a coffee, if you have the time(y)

really good to see they are still open, rumour was when Mrs Hamilton died they closed the CL

It was a CC CL when we last went, has it changed to CCC?

Absolute favourite of ours

David, I've just spoken to Robert's wife at Newton Farm and she said that the CL is closed, the licence was revoked last year.
She also that there are currently many people staying there just now.......but they are there "illegally", something to do with them having more than five vans on the site.

Thanks Margaret, might try again later this year, but there are a lot of other places we are yet to stay yet, maybe time for a change, in the summer months there were quite often up to 10 units on Newton Farm, not surprised they lost their rights to the CL with being to visually obvious to 2 other licenced sites, shame if it is lost though. Maybe we should have a meet there, maybe as a one off that might be OK? (y)

My favourite stop off on my way to Cairnryan. .. always have a cuppa and butty at the little cafe in the lay by...
Must have been doing that for 30 odd years ...

We have just got back from D&G it is a lovely part of the country .
We saw a van Wilding down at the harbour at Wigtown , the book place. The Isle of Whithorn has a car park near to St Ninians Chapel where you might be able to ovenight .The Community Cafe in the village makes lovely coffee at a very reasonable price. The roads are nice and quite although it can take you longer than you think to reach places. Lots of nice gardens to visit or Threave House in Castle Douglas ( National Trust ) is nice too . the Mull of Galloway is well worth a visit . you can also visit Belfast for the day (departs from Stranraer)Kirkudbright is very nice too . Have a nice trip.

Since 2008 after caravanning for 20 years
There is now no ferry from Stranraer, it moved a few years ago. Both ferry companies now operate from two separate ports, one in Cairnryan and the other just north of it. It is the northern one that operates to Belfast.

Skyreburn is a good stop off but you should try the Old Schoolhouse at Ringford (closed Wednesdays) if you fancy something more than a bacon butty and pot of tea (y)

The cafe's a gold mine, very popular with lorry drivers and people on their way to and from the ferry terminal. Lovely spot to stop for a wander down onto the beach as well(y)
Let us know next time you're passing and drop in for a cuppa.......

Hi Margaret
I remember when it was a little wooden shack, but for a good while now proper little pre fab type cabin.
Also have fond memories of sitting outside feeding the birds which came down beside you.
My family remember it from their young days and still always ask '' did you stop at that little cafe'' ...
The area has changed in appearance lately with all the trees been cleared from the opposite side of the road....
Thanks for your invite for a cuppa..very kind and one day if it's convenient ill try and take you up on the offer.
Always nice to meet and put faces to names....
Thanks...
Andy

Portpatrick nice little seaside town,Wigtown famous for it's book shops and Glenluce (Auchenmalg) another lovely place to visit with deserted beaches there is a campsite there also a pub called the Cock inn.. went around there a couple of years ago Sandhead has a wonderful long sandy beach deserted ,Garlieston is where they built the Mulberry harbours and then towed them down to to the DDay landing beaches in Normandy.. Loads of places if you want to wild camp and other sites as well ,if you right to the end of the peninsular there is a RSPB reserve and stunning views across the mull of Galloway to The Isle of Man etc ..Stranraer is a nice little port town where the ferry sails across to larne and Belfast There are a couple of supermarkets for provisions etc
one thing I did find if you like wifi and phone signals I couldn't get any at all ...also not a wide range of eating places but still very nice uncrowded villages /towns mind we went in October hope this helps

Sweetheart Abbey located in the pretty village of New Abbey some 7 miles West of Dumfries, council car park, motorhomes allowed to overnight, when entering car park keep to the left at far end of car park so as not to inconvenience regular users, very quiet with no road noise, can be busy during day with tourists and locals. Good freeview coverage either Scottish or North of England (Newcastle/Cumbria) depending on direction of ariel. O2 coverage fair, 3 coverage Nil. Public toilets on site with Radar key access to disabled WC (always spotlessly clean) Freshwater a short walk down alongside Abbey to cemetery, freshwater bib tap through gate immediately on left. Local pubs serving good meals, Superb highly recommended seasonal tearoom adjoins car park, small Spar type shop a short walk sells basics, newspapers etc.

Car park very busy at weekends with walkers, cyclists and tourists so best to arrive late afternoon early evening depending on time of year quieter during week. The local council have been very good in allowing overnighting so please do not abuse, we always arrive late afternoon/early evening leaving early/mid morning.

Some superb walks in area and dog friendly. Very quiet in winter and a good base for exploring area and some superb birdwatching sites very close by. Very quiet, secure and safe stopover.

Tonight's delightful wilding stopover, please let's not disclose it on an open forum. Anyone wishing info pm me, there is an honesty box for Motorhomes, a tearoom and shop a few yards away and a good pub serving reasonable meals 70 yards away. Good TV and phone reception, some great walks from the site and it is dog friendly. Can be very busy at weekends and is popular with continental vans (it's fame has spread to their forums) No road noise, quiet and safe though shop opens at 07.30 so cars come and go for newspapers etc.

To add to previous there are public toilets on site and if you have a radar key the disabled toilet is spacious and very clean. In winter this site is very quiet and a superb location for birding, the Merse just over the river can hold impressive numbers of geese, Peregrine Falcon are regular, many duck species, it's possible to have both Goosander and Merganser together for comparison. Buzzard and Raven are common plus many species of wader. It is one of our favourite wilding spots where Motorhomes are encouraged to overnight. Plenty of shopping in Dumfries with spacious uncrowded car parks along the riverside (allowing more opportunities for overnighting) the major supermarkets well represented with ample parking (including Lidl and Aldi)
