‘Freemium’ Mobile Service

Launching in July, Broken Link Removed will offer consumers in the UK 200 minutes, 200 texts and 200MB of data, completely free of charge. FreedomPop’s charitable SIM-only plan will also come with free international calls to over 60 countries, as well as free calls and texts to other FreedomPop users.

The catch? Well actually, there isn’t one. FreedomPop intend to make ends meet by selling bolt-on extras. Included is the ability to stockpile unused data, rolling it over to the next month. FreedomPop will also, for an additional fee, allow you to browse anonymously online. For most of us, this entry-level plan won’t provide nearly enough minutes, texts or indeed data to power our mobile-reliant lifestyles. For anyone who isn’t a heavy user of their smartphone though, FreedomPop could be a winner.

A few of these "free" services have folded in the recent past. Might make some people a bit shy of trying it out. This one appears to have strong backing and been around for a few years so looks promising. Especially if they make roaming free too :)

Thanks for posting the info

As a cynic there's bound to be a catch, bombarded with text and voice adverts perhaps and/or heavy charges if you exceed the free allowance.

Wonderful use of language in that link: "vaulting the pay wall" - yuck!

Sounds brilliant. But I just read their privacy policy. In a nutshell, you agree that they can send you emails etc about anything and any products they decide might be of interest to you, they of course don't know if its of interest until they send it to you do they. In other words, anything they want to sell you from pension plans to viagra and beyond:) Thats not too bad but they may (I suspect will sell) your details to to other companies, and i suspect that means many companies, who will no doubt be contacting you for all sort of reasons.

Suffering from scepticeameia as I do, I think although interesting, I will give it a miss for the moment and wait to see how it pans out.

They will have to pay third parties for calls and roaming which they offer for free to you. Its a business and has to make money somehow from you use of its facility, even if indirectly, thats what bothers me. I think the word "Free" is used to hook you.

Just did a quick search on revues and found this, http://www.reviewstalk.com/complaints-reviews/freedompop-l31473.html

I agree, though I don't want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm. However, I won't be an 'early adopter' as they say. Happy to let others go before me in this case!
