The deadly dog chews Credit: Erewash Borough Council

Dog chews baited in rat poison have been found in Stanley Common in Derbyshire.

The deadly bites have now been removed from the Glendon Street area after a dog walker found them on Monday.

Derbyshire Police have been made aware of the incident.

This is a very serious and very worrying incident and we are grateful to the member of public for taking immediate action so that we could remove the baits before any dog was affected. I would urge all dog walkers to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or bait they find.

TBH I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often, there's some sick people out there.

Was a newbie, now a Middie.
We are very lucky. Our JR wont even take a dog treat offered by another regular dog walker whom she knows.

They should have used these instead* http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/...W8nstqh8waIe9-WjqNLbEz-NZPcZrEj9vAaAqeM8P8HAQ

But more seriously no dog under control would be able to eat it fast enough I suspect. Dogs allowed to roam without their owner nearby would be a different matter. Moral of the story is keep an eye on your pooch, baited poisons can be found more or less anywhere in the countryside. Illegal but common.

*Joke alert

Ball of shame: Tennis balls laced with what is believed to be rat poison were found in a public park

Five tennis balls filled with poison have been found in a city park.

A member of the public discovered them at Festival Park in the Pacific Quay area of Glasgow on February 20 and animal welfare officers were alerted.

However, the person who found the tennis balls put them in a bin and they were then removed by someone before officers from the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals arrived.

The charity said it is possible they were left to target rats, but warned of a danger to dogs and children.

An undercover inspector with the charity's special investigations unit said: "Someone had cut holes in the tennis balls and filled them with shredded paper and blue pellets, thought to be rat poison.
