Make sure you have good breakdown insurance cover especially for Europe. This is the pics of my recovery from France where I broke down last week, the suspension collapsed on the rear.

Im glad I took out breakdown cover for £80 before I left, I wouldnt want to have paid the cost of all these trucks and ended with a 40 foot arctic curtain sider

Bad luck!

Who did you insure with?

What broke? Leaf spring or chassis corrosion?

Have they checked your weight yet?

Yes, I'm interested in who you were insured with. My breakdown cover only covers recovery to a local garage. Not back to the UK which I assume is what happened to you.

It was the other way round, the artic arrived today at my friends yard with no way of offloading, they had to call a local company to come with a flatbed tilt and slide and drove it from one to the other back to back.

No fixing it in france in affraid, Major failure I think, its being inspected on monday by an ALKO dealer in Essex so I will know more then but from phone calls to them and others it sounds like suspected torsion bar snapping. As its 18 years old I have been told parts may not be available anymore and it may require a new axle, possibly 2 axles. I hit a pothole with the front and swerved to avoid hitting with back and either hit the hole or the kerb, pissing with rain in an unlit road at night and next day I noticed it was sitting low and got worse as the day went on

Insurance taken out with Campton (brokers) markerstudy underwriters, with a separate breakdown policy for £80 via camptons. They pass onto their European department IMA and Dial Assist.

Had to laugh when the French local garage thought a tube of grease would miraculously rise the suspension 4 inches

many many years! since I was a kid
torsion bar failure on alko axles is pretty common. made more likely if the van has not been serviced regularly and correctly whilst lifted with weight off the axles. not too many garages equipped to do it with a big tag axle. a single torsion bar failing can cause all the others to fail as they take the weight. saw one where the actual axle tube had twisted

I would say you will need a new pair of axles, so no change from £4k as the axle is over £1600 each
