It seems my dog gets skin irritations from many of the dry dog foods so advised to try raw dog food. He's taken to it really well and the itching and scratching has stopped. However i'm now wondering if he should stay on it permanently as i'm uncertain if its readily available abroard. Any advice.

We feed our dog raw but when we travel we take Natures Menu pouches. He adapts without an issue. Just does more poos.

Look at what wolves eat. That is dogs hereditary food.

The downside to raw food is you need to keep it well and get it from good sources.

I take your point, but grain free doesn't have to be raw.

I'd disagree. Millions of kids do just fine on a staple of pizza and chips.

Not many human nutritionists would consider pizza and chips to be a balanced complete diet for kids, whereas most canine nutritionists would consider complete commercial dogfood to be a balanced canine diet - (and in most countries the law would ensure they are).
I'm not against raw foods, they are just not the bees knees some of their supporters seem to think they are.
Anyway this has become a bit of a thread hijack, so I'm out of here.

As a Compromise in Spain we bought bags of chicken wings which fitted in the freezer in the van. Needed to think a bit other additional s to his diet

Our adopted 35kg GWP was on dry food when we got him, he would poop 4 or 5 times a day, the size and consistency of a £4 Mr Whippy (without the flake !) since he's been on a BARF diet, he poops a couple of times a day, two or three firm golf ball sized doings that in comparison, are a pleasure to pick up !

We feed exclusively raw (and whatever veggies we're eating on the day). When travelling we feed Lily's Kitchen. The dogs switch from one to the other happily (change in poo size though).

Bakers which has to be probably the most popular dog food in the uk almost gets a zero as he believes it contains a form of anti freeze as a preservative.

Not only is it super heated the ingredients look awful. More meat on a pepperoni Pizza

I bought some bakers once because ir was so popular. The dogs loved it but I didn't get it any more after seeing the crap that's in it.

My lad has been on raw for about 8 years. With canned food he had gut problems and seemed to poo about the same volume as went in.

He generally has working dog Natural Instinct (brand) and these are complete with veg etc. Poos less often and oddly his poo is less in volume and consistency.

Plus his breathe is much better since moving to raw!

He also has a raw chicken wing everyday.

Rather than run the gauntlet of the EU jobsworths we buy "Dogador" from Picard at Coquelles. It's not complete so we add peas and carrots to it when feeding.

Sadly it's not available at all Picard stores across France. Instead we feed him beef or beef/pork mince from the supermarket and add veggies as required.

The vet when we had the AHC done in December was surprised at his teeth and weight. He's 12yo. The dog not the vet.

Our big dog has a very sensitive digestive system. After extensive research I have settled on a complete diet based on Sweet potato and Turkey or lamb. At £52 a bag not the cheapest dog food but he has thrived on it. He has been on the same brand for 4 years. What we pick up from him is not extensive.
I would never feed raw food. After watching a tv programme about feeding dogs - by a Vet- showing the bacteria on raw food which can not only affect the dog but also the humans - no thank you. Complete food has everything needed by the dog and the itching/ scratching can be caused by other things.

I know a friend that feeds raw chicken that she buys from supermarkets when she travels as she can’t carry enough and keep it fresh (4 big woofers). She just buys those large packs of wings etc they certainly wolf them down.

Here we still feed pizza and chips, just chuffing expensive ones that had odd names…

As a young lad i worked in a pet shop and the most bought dog food was vitalin that seemed to basically be cornflakes ok crushed maize and a few biscuits in there (This was 40yrs ago).

Do you use raw meat in your own kitchen! The dangers are exactly the same. There are plenty of raw dog food suppliers who supply only meat certified for human consumption. You do need to be scrupulous about hygiene when dealing with raw food, no matter who is going to eat it.

As a boy our dogs had a can of chappie or a pedigree chum as a treat… they seemed to do ok, I quite liked chappie It tasted a bit like salami….
